Pittsburgh Seemed Like a Virus Success Story. Now Cases Are Surging.

PITTSBURGH — A little more than three weeks ago, officials in Pittsburgh announced a milestone enviable for almost any major city in America: A day had gone by without a single new confirmed case of the coronavirus. It was good news for a city that had seen only a modest outbreak all along, even as the virus raged through places like Philadelphia and New York.

That was then.

Governor Greg Abbott today announced the first phase of the State of Texas' ongoing plan to safely and strategically open Texas while minimizing the spread of COVID-19. Under Phase I, certain services and activities are allowed to open with limited occupancy, and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is issuing minimum standard health protocols for all businesses and individuals to follow. The Governor also outlined special guidance for Texans over 65 and detailed a comprehensive mitigation plan for nursing homes in Texas. The Governor also announced a statewide testing and tracing program developed by DSHS that will help public health officials quickly identify and test Texans who contract COVID-19 and mitigate further spread of the virus.

Coronavirus has been detected on particles of air pollution by scientists investigating whether this could enable it to be carried over longer distances and increase the number of people infected.

The work is preliminary and it is not yet known if the virus remains viable on pollution particles and in sufficient quantity to cause disease.

Orange County to kick off new state initiative to have more Texans tested for Covid-19

ORANGE COUNTY — On April 24, we learned about the first Covid-19-related death in Orange County.

We also learned that Orange County will be the first county in Texas to kick off a new statewide initiative to have more Texans tested for Covid-19.

Gov. Greg Abbott's goal is to test one percent of the population in each county.

Up To $25,000 Hazard Pay For Essential Workers ‘One Of Our Very Highest Priorities’

On Tuesday, the Senate passed a bipartisan bill to add an additional $484 billion in relief monies for small businesses, and the House is expected to pass it Thursday according to The Wall Street Journal. But nothing in this bill addresses the outstanding issue of hazard pay for essential frontline workers. Nothing that Congress has approved so far has included hazard pay for frontline workers. Though, Senator Schumer (D – NY) has stated that getting hazard pay approved in the next phase relief bill “is one of our very highest priorities.”
