Overall two-dose vaccine effectiveness (VE) against Omicron variant-related hospitalization or death remained above 70% for at least 6 months among adults in Hong Kong but dropped to below 62% in those aged 80 and older, necessitating a third dose, finds a case-control study published today in JAMA Network Open.

Early COVID-19 variants remain in deer populations

While COVID-19 variants Alpha, Gamma and Delta are no longer circulating among humans, they continue to spread in white-tailed deer.

The animals are the most abundant large mammal in North America. Scientists aren't sure whether the deer could act as long-term reservoirs for these obsolete variants.

Updated: Guidance on how long people should quarantine with newest COVID variant XBB1.5

...People with COVID-19 should isolate for five days, the CDC said. And, if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), they should follow that by five days of wearing a mask when around others to minimize the risk of infecting people they encounter.

The change is motivated by science demonstrating that the majority of COVID transmission occurs early in the course of illness — generally in the one to two days prior to onset of symptoms, and then two to three days after, according to CDC guidance.

Additionally, the CDC also recently updated the recommended quarantine period for anyone who knows they were exposed to COVID-19.
