MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas --Rice farmers in Matagorda County said they will no longer be able to farm much rice if they don’t get any water within the next two years.
An estimated 200 farmers just southeast of Houston face the same fate.
A canal that was once filled with water is now bone dry. Farmers said it’s the worst drought they’ve ever seen.

Farmers Look to TCEQ to Restore Water to Dry Crops

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality commissioners voted Friday to affirm an order that requires farmers to stop drawing water from the Brazos River.
The curtailment order, which has been in effect since July 2, suspends and decreases water pumping for farmers and other customers along the river. The order is in place until Dec. 28.

Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Oklahoma in Water War with Texas

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday issued a unanimous ruling for Oklahoma over a North Texas water district in a case over delivery of water from the Red River.
The case, Tarrant Regional Water District v. Herrmann, Rudolf J. et al, pitted fast-growing North Texas against the state of Oklahoma. The Tarrant Regional Water District, which serves Fort Worth and other North Texas communities, wanted to buy water from Oklahoma reservoirs, but Oklahoma passed laws that effectively meant it wouldn't sell.
